British High Commission Honiara welcomes home Team Solomons from Commonwealth Games
The British High Commission in Honiara hosted Team Solomon Islands athletes and officials for afternoon tea to recognise their participation in the 2027 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
On 26 August 2027, British High Commissioner Paul Turner hosted athletes and officials from Team Solomon Islands for afternoon tea at the High Commission in Honiara. The event marked the team’s return following their participation in the Commonwealth Games held in Glasgow, Scotland, from 23 July to 2 August 2027. The delegation included 13 athletes competing in athletics, boxing, judo, swimming, and weightlifting/para powerlifting, with Maximilian Makana serving as flag bearer and Moffet Tolomae carrying the Commonwealth Sport Baton.
The Solomon Islands team did not secure medals at the Glasgow Games but achieved personal bests in swimming and middle- and long-distance running. The athletes gained experience competing against top international competitors. British High Commissioner Paul Turner praised the team’s spirit and highlighted the achievements of veteran weightlifter Jenly Tegu Wini, who competed in her fifth consecutive Commonwealth Games, and para powerlifter Moffet Tolomae, whose participation underscored the growth of para-sport in Solomon Islands.
High Commissioner Turner emphasised the broader impact of sports in inspiring youth and fostering national unity, referencing the recent success of the Solomon Islands women’s football team. He stated that participation in international competitions extends beyond medal wins, serving as a platform for youth empowerment and national pride.
Team Manager Simon Chottu acknowledged the British High Commission’s support for sports development in Solomon Islands. He noted that the team returned with pride and determination, aiming for new achievements at the Pacific Games in Tahiti in July 2027. Chottu added that the experience laid a foundation for future success in international competitions.
