Discord re-introduces age verification policy based on 'account signal' methodology

Discord has announced a revised age verification policy eight months after its initial rollout failed, introducing an age estimation model that relies on account signals such as account age and payment methods. The company, led by CTO Stanislav Vishnevskiy, acknowledged that its first attempt lacked clarity and transparency, prompting widespread confusion among users. The new approach aims to reduce the need for intrusive verification by estimating age groups, particularly for users aged 13-17, who receive additional protections. Vishnevskiy emphasized that over 90 percent of existing users will not require verification, addressing concerns about excessive data collection.

The updated policy expands verification options beyond face scans or identity documents, now including credit cards, Apple App Store, Google Play Store, Google Wallet, and AgeKey. These methods vary by region and device, with Discord assuring users that data is solely used to determine age groups. The company has vetted each option to ensure privacy while meeting safety requirements. Vishnevskiy stated that users can choose the method they are most comfortable with, reinforcing the company’s commitment to transparency.

Discord’s announcement follows multiple lawsuits alleging inadequate child safety measures, including claims from the New Jersey attorney general and a family suing both Discord and Roblox. Florida’s investigation into child predators targeting children on the platform and Arkansas’ allegations of knowingly endangering children have further intensified scrutiny. These legal challenges underscore the urgency of the company’s efforts to strengthen protections for teen users.

In a personal note, Vishnevskiy highlighted the company’s decision to implement stronger protections globally, even where not legally required, to prioritize privacy and safety. He urged policymakers to consider balanced approaches that advance both teen safety and privacy, emphasizing the importance of public input in shaping future regulations.
