Owlchemy Labs’ new XR game Hyper Visor launches at $1.

Owlchemy Labs, a studio known for its VR titles, has announced Hyper Visor as its first extended reality (XR) game, designed as a launch title for HTC’s XREAL Aura headset. The game will be available on the Google Play Store for $1.99, positioning it as an accessible entry point into XR gaming. Hyper Visor blends multiple gameplay styles, including rhythm games and side-scrolling shooters, using hand tracking and a pair of interactive sunglasses referred to as 'living shades.'

The XREAL Aura is marketed as 'spatial computing eyeware' rather than a traditional headset, featuring a wired connection to an Android phone. Owlchemy Labs describes Hyper Visor as an 'original XR arcade blaster,' reflecting its broader approach to XR beyond conventional VR or AR definitions. The studio’s decision to adopt XR terminology aligns with its stated goal of making immersive experiences more approachable for casual users.

CEO Andrew Eiche emphasized the studio’s focus on accessibility, noting that the XREAL Aura’s design as sunglasses helps overcome barriers to adoption. Eiche argued that the device passes the 'cafe test,' allowing users to feel comfortable wearing it in public without drawing attention. This shift may influence other VR developers navigating a challenging economic landscape by highlighting alternative hardware and market strategies.

Despite expanding into XR, Owlchemy Labs retains its commitment to VR, as evidenced by internal office signage and its ongoing support for titles like Simulator series ports and Cosmonious High. The studio’s transition to XR also underscores its adaptability, leveraging Google’s backing and platform partnerships to explore new opportunities in immersive gaming.
