Digital Sun Games, known for Moonlighter, announced it is delaying the public playtest of its upcoming Tower Defensevania game ReVamp, originally scheduled for broader release. The studio cited concerns over recent incidents where games were cloned using generative AI tools before their official launch. In a statement on Steam and Bluesky, the team explained that a large public build posed too great a risk given the current cloning landscape. The decision reflects broader industry unease about protecting original work in an era of rapid AI-assisted replication.

The studio will instead host a more contained playtest via its Discord server starting October 29, limiting exposure to a controlled audience. Digital Sun emphasized that early visibility is critical for indie developers to build fanbases and sustain momentum. The shift underscores how AI cloning is forcing studios to rethink traditional marketing and testing strategies. The move also highlights the growing tension between transparency and risk management in game development.

Digital Sun is not alone in altering promotional plans due to cloning fears. Alliance Arts and Who's You recently canceled the Steam Next Fest demo for Drunken Goddess Reflux following similar concerns. Industry veterans note that fast-follow cloning is not new, pointing to past examples like Vlambeer’s Ridiculous Fishing and Threes! being replicated on mobile platforms as early as 2013. However, generative AI tools have accelerated the threat, enabling quicker and more sophisticated copying of game concepts.

The studio’s announcement calls attention to the need for stronger protections on platforms like Steam to deter predatory cloning practices. Digital Sun urged platforms to implement policies that safeguard original work, warning that without such measures, smaller studios may struggle to compete. The decision to scale back ReVamp’s playtest reflects a broader industry shift toward caution in sharing unfinished projects amid rising AI-enabled cloning risks.
