The funding will provide access to frontier AI tools for all 17 Department of Energy (DOE) National Laboratories, including researchers at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) and the National Laboratory of the Rockies (NLR). The program builds on earlier collaborations that introduced AI for science tools and secure platforms like Gemini for Government to support DOE operations and research teams.
At PNNL, senior scientist Dr. Henry Kvinge is using AlphaEvolve to automate the exploration of complex mathematical systems, reducing discovery timelines from years to months. The AI identifies hidden connections in combinatorics, enabling researchers to model intricate geometries and algebraic structures more efficiently. Dr. Kvinge noted that the tool’s broad mathematical knowledge accelerates exploration, though the team continues refining its applications.
Researchers at NLR are leveraging Gemini to automate laboratory hardware interactions, cutting microscope calibration time from over 90 minutes to 13 minutes and reducing manual focusing steps from 50 to two. Dr. Steven R. Spurgeon, a materials data scientist, highlighted how this enables autonomous experimentation workflows that observe, reason, and decide in real time, expanding the material design space beyond manual capabilities.
The Genesis Mission aims to transform research across energy, security, and scientific challenges by providing DOE National Laboratories with advanced AI tools. Google DeepMind invites researchers to learn more about these capabilities at the upcoming Google Public Sector Summit in October, emphasizing the mission’s potential to redefine scientific discovery in the U.S.
