AlloyDB Express: Instant, scale-to-zero PostgreSQL for developers and coding agents
Google Cloud launches AlloyDB Express, a PostgreSQL service for developers and AI agents that starts in under two seconds, scales to zero when idle, and embeds enterprise AI tools directly into the database.
Google Cloud has introduced AlloyDB Express, a new PostgreSQL service designed to address bottlenecks in AI-driven development workflows. The service allows developers and coding agents to provision fully isolated databases in under two seconds using tools like gcloud CLI, REST API, MCP, Terraform, or the Google Cloud Console. This capability aims to reduce delays in testing, prototyping, and iterative development cycles that often stall when databases take minutes or hours to set up.
AlloyDB Express includes a scale-to-zero feature that automatically pauses compute resources after 15 minutes of inactivity, incurring no cost during idle periods. When a new query arrives, the database resumes operation within seconds, balancing cost efficiency with immediate availability. The service also embeds enterprise AI capabilities directly into the database, enabling vector search, text generation, and natural language-to-SQL conversion without requiring external integrations or complex setups.
Security and governance are central to AlloyDB Express, with built-in enterprise guardrails that apply automatically to every database created. Administrators can define IAM, network, and organization policies once, ensuring all databases remain within company security standards. The service uses public DNS endpoints to mask IP addresses and blocks incoming traffic by default, while private VPC networking options like Private Service Connect enable secure internal integrations.
Pricing for AlloyDB Express is structured to align with usage patterns, charging $0.115 per Compute Unit hour for active compute, $0.30 per GB-month for storage, and $0.00 per hour for paused compute. A free tier offers 50 free Compute Units per month, and users can upgrade to production-scale AlloyDB with one click while preserving data, schemas, and connection strings. The service is available today in preview through the Google Cloud console or documentation.
