Google Cloud has introduced Developer Device Platform (DDP) in public preview, addressing challenges in mobile app development where testing across diverse devices is costly and inconsistent. DDP offers instant access to hardware profiles via real physical devices and high-concurrency virtual emulators, replacing the reliance on personal devices for testing. The platform is positioned as an evolution of Firebase Test Lab, now supporting agentic development workflows for automated testing and debugging. Developers can use preferred coding agents to interact with apps, run tests, and optimize performance across multiple devices efficiently.
DDP provides two core functions: Device Streaming for interactive debugging and Device Run for parallel testing in CI/CD pipelines. Device Streaming allows developers to remotely access emulators or physical devices, enabling real-time interaction, debugging, and performance monitoring. Device Run executes tests across hundreds of devices simultaneously, helping identify device-specific issues before production deployment. Both APIs are designed to integrate seamlessly into existing development workflows, reducing manual effort and improving reliability.
Integration with Android Studio and Android CLI is planned, alongside a DDP agent skill to enable AI coding agents to perform tasks such as vibe coding, testing, and debugging. The platform also supports smart sharding for parallelized tests, delivering results across hundreds of devices in minutes. Smart auto-retries minimize delays by addressing failed tests within shards, avoiding full test suite reruns. These features aim to accelerate development cycles while maintaining accuracy in performance validation.
Developer Device Platform will be available to all Google Cloud users starting August 12, with pricing based on a pay-per-minute model during public preview. Costs vary depending on whether testing uses emulators or physical devices. The platform targets mobile developers seeking to leverage unique device features and on-device AI capabilities, offering a scalable solution to reduce testing complexity and improve deployment confidence.
