How we built the new GPS on Pixel Watch 5
Google’s Pixel Watch 5 introduces improved GPS accuracy by combining satellite data with AI-driven 3D building models to correct signal errors, tested over 4,000 miles.
The Pixel Watch 5 improves GPS route tracking by integrating global satellite data with AI-enhanced 3D building models to reduce errors caused by signal interference in urban areas. The device compresses raw GPS data and processes it externally to maintain battery efficiency, avoiding heavy on-device computation. Engineers validated the system through 4,000 miles of real-world testing, demonstrating superior accuracy compared to competitors like the Apple Watch Ultra 3 and Garmin Fenix 8 Pro in challenging environments.
Accuracy challenges arise when GPS signals bounce off buildings or encounter atmospheric distortions, leading to imprecise location tracking. Google’s team addressed this by leveraging Google Maps’ global 3D building models and AI algorithms to correct signal errors in real time. Additional support came from Google’s network of GPS reference stations, which provide real-time corrections for atmospheric and satellite discrepancies, further refining location precision.
The development team, led by engineers Sharath Ananth and Frank van Diggelen, prioritized fitness tracking as a core smartwatch function. They aimed to eliminate erratic GPS readings that disrupt outdoor workout tracking, such as runs or hikes. The solution required balancing high-accuracy data processing with the Pixel Watch 5’s compact hardware and battery constraints, ensuring performance did not compromise device longevity.
Testing involved extensive field trials across diverse environments, with testers wearing multiple smartwatches and specialized equipment to validate accuracy. Results showed the Pixel Watch 5’s GPS routes closely matched ground truth data, outperforming expectations. The device will be available for preorder on August 12 and retail starting August 20, priced at $399 for the 41mm model and $429 for the 45mm model.
