Google has partnered with airlines, air navigation providers, and flight planning software firms to use AI forecasts that help pilots and controllers adjust flight paths to avoid contrail-prone regions. Initial trials showed that targeted deviations could prevent contrail formation without disrupting normal operations, validating the approach as both scientifically sound and operationally feasible.

Operation Blue Skies expands this effort into the world’s first state-backed trial to mitigate contrails at the scale of an entire oceanic airspace.
