Waymo is bringing Gemini into its custom Ojai vehicles.
Waymo has integrated Google’s Gemini AI into its custom Ojai vehicles, enabling passengers to use voice commands for cabin controls and local information via an in-car assistant.
Waymo, a subsidiary of Alphabet, announced the integration of Google’s Gemini AI into its purpose-built Ojai vehicles, marking a new feature for its autonomous ride-hailing service. The company stated that while the Waymo Driver handles navigation and safety, passengers can now access Gemini as an in-car assistant. This allows users to issue voice commands for tasks such as adjusting climate controls or requesting nearby points of interest. The feature is designed to enhance convenience without compromising the primary autonomous driving system.
The integration enables hands-free interaction with the vehicle’s cabin systems and external information. Users can ask Gemini to perform actions like setting the air conditioning to 65 degrees Fahrenheit or finding nearby coffee shops. The AI assistant remains inactive until summoned, ensuring it does not interfere with the Waymo Driver’s operations. Waymo emphasized that the system is designed to provide additional utility without compromising safety or autonomy.
Gemini’s role in the Ojai vehicles is limited to passenger-facing functions, such as answering questions about local landmarks or providing recommendations. The AI does not influence the vehicle’s driving decisions, which are managed exclusively by the Waymo Driver. This separation ensures that the autonomous system remains fully operational while passengers access supplementary services. Waymo described the feature as an optional enhancement for riders seeking more interactive experiences.
The announcement follows Waymo’s ongoing expansion of its autonomous ride-hailing service, which currently operates in select U.S. cities. The company did not disclose pricing or availability timelines for the new Gemini integration. Waymo reiterated that safety remains its top priority, with the autonomous system continuing to handle all driving tasks independently. The addition of Gemini is positioned as an optional tool for passengers to personalize their rides.
