HiRO-ACEv2: Simulating extreme weather at 3 km resolution for a fraction of the cost
Researchers unveiled HiRO-ACEv2, an AI system generating high-resolution climate data at 3 km resolution for extreme weather events at a fraction of the cost of traditional models like X-SHiELD.
HiRO-ACEv2, the latest update to the High Resolution Output Ai2 Climate Emulator (HiRO-ACE), introduces HiROv2, a downscaling model that enhances the system’s ability to simulate rare and extreme weather events such as intense rainfall, high winds, and pressure variations with high accuracy. The model operates at a 3 km resolution while maintaining computational efficiency, making it significantly more affordable than high-resolution global atmospheric models like X-SHiELD. HiRO-ACEv2 builds on its predecessor by expanding the range of weather fields it can predict simultaneously, improving its skill in capturing extreme events that occur as infrequently as once in a million data points.
The system combines HiROv2 with an updated ACE model, which generates coarse 100 km resolution simulations that serve as the foundation for HiROv2’s high-resolution outputs. Over a decade-long simulation, HiRO-ACEv2’s hurricane energy, climate patterns, and distributions of rain, wind, and pressure closely align with X-SHiELD’s benchmarks, demonstrating the reliability of its coarse-to-fine approach. The model’s ability to generate realistic hurricane structures, including eyes and rain bands, further validates its accuracy in reproducing complex weather phenomena.
HiRO-ACEv2’s cost efficiency is a key advantage, enabling researchers to produce global 3 km climate data at roughly 1/300th the expense of X-SHiELD, with even greater savings for regional simulations. A streamlined version of HiROv2 is also in development, promising to reduce computation time by more than tenfold. The system’s flexibility allows for the generation of multiple high-resolution datasets over extended periods, supporting diverse research applications in climate and weather analysis.
To facilitate user evaluation, HiRO-ACEv2 includes a web demo that visually compares HiROv1 and HiROv2 outputs with X-SHiELD, enabling quick assessments of precipitation, wind, and sea-level pressure data. The models and tutorial notebooks are available for download, providing researchers with tools for in-depth analysis and custom simulations. Future updates aim to expand the system’s capabilities to include additional climate scenarios and variables like near-surface temperature and snowpack prediction.
