Formula E and Lenovo put AI to the test across the future of motorsport
Formula E and Lenovo are testing AI tools to enhance fan engagement through improved broadcast quality, interactive guides, and real-time race data visualization.
Formula E, an all-electric racing series, has partnered with Lenovo to explore how AI can deepen fan engagement across digital and broadcast platforms. The collaboration focuses on practical applications such as improving onboard camera footage, creating interactive fan guides, and integrating real-time race data into broadcasts. Formula E’s CTO emphasized the goal of making fans feel like active participants rather than passive spectators.
Lenovo developed an AI system to enhance onboard camera footage, addressing challenges like glare, haze, and rapid light changes during races. Tested on footage from Jeddah and Monaco, the AI corrected color and improved clarity in under three seconds, producing more natural-looking images and reducing unnatural tints in challenging lighting conditions.
Formula E and Lenovo introduced an AI-powered Fan Experience Guide featuring a digital human that allows fans to ask questions about drivers, circuits, or rules in real time. The system, developed in under 30 days, achieved over 95% answer accuracy and delivered responses in under one second, providing immediate access to structured Formula E knowledge.
The partnership also trialed an AR broadcast concept to overlay real-time race data, such as speed, energy strategy, and ATTACK MODE status, directly into the in-car broadcast view. The design aims to make live race dynamics more visible and engaging for viewers while maintaining readability and sponsor visibility.
