Azure Cloud HSM Hardware Audit Logging: Verifiable audit trails for security and compliance
Microsoft introduces Hardware Audit Logging for Azure Cloud HSM to provide verifiable, hardware-originated audit trails for regulated workloads, enabling compliance, security, and operations teams to trace administrative actions directly to the HSM.
Organizations handling regulated or security-sensitive workloads often require evidence of who performed management operations on hardware security modules (HSMs), what actions were taken, and when. Azure Cloud HSM now offers Hardware Audit Logging, which captures audit records generated by the HSM itself for supported management operations. This hardware-originated evidence supports monitoring, compliance reporting, and forensic investigations by providing records tied directly to the device performing cryptographic tasks. Traditional logs remain useful, but regulated entities frequently seek evidence originating as close as possible to the protected cryptographic boundary.
HSMs safeguard an organization’s most sensitive cryptographic assets, making their configuration and administration critical to security. Authentication events, user changes, policy updates, backup operations, and key lifecycle activities are all relevant during incident investigations or compliance audits. By sourcing audit data directly from the HSM, Azure Cloud HSM delivers records that validate administrative activity and support monitoring and compliance processes. Security teams can analyze authentication and administrative actions, while compliance teams use the records as evidence for control assessments.
Customers receive human-readable audit records alongside HSM-signed binary audit data, signatures, and certificates to independently verify the authenticity and integrity of signed audit batches. This customer-controlled verification path ensures records used in monitoring and reporting can be traced back to the signed evidence produced by the HSM. Audit logging is enabled as an immutable HSM partition policy, maintaining consistent coverage of supported management activity and reducing the risk of logging being disabled during routine administration.
The capability is designed for organizations with stringent compliance and security requirements, including financial services, payment processing, government, and critical infrastructure. Audit events are delivered to Azure Monitor Log Analytics, enabling integration with broader monitoring and security operations workflows, including Microsoft Sentinel. Centralizing these events allows teams to correlate HSM activity with other operational and security data, supporting investigations and reporting workflows.
