Microsoft’s newest India datacenter region goes live to power the country’s AI economy and enable Frontier Firms

Microsoft announced the general availability of its India South Central cloud region in Hyderabad, Telangana, on August 6, 2026, providing customers with a local option to run eligible Microsoft Cloud services. The region includes three Availability Zones built to meet India’s regulatory and seismic-zone requirements, supporting mission-critical workloads at scale. Microsoft stated the infrastructure is designed to help organizations modernize systems, build digital services, and deploy AI workloads with enterprise-grade security, compliance, and governance.

The new region brings Microsoft’s total cloud presence in India to four regions, alongside existing locations in Pune, Chennai, and Mumbai, as well as two datacenters operated in partnership with Jio. Microsoft highlighted a $20.5 billion investment commitment to India’s cloud and AI future, building on prior investments of $3 billion in January 2025 and $17.5 billion in December 2025 to strengthen the country’s digital and AI infrastructure.

Microsoft’s India South Central region has seen early demand from financial services, digital platforms, and diversified enterprises seeking to strengthen operational resilience and support business continuity. Customers such as the Adani Group, HDFC Bank, and PB Pay cited benefits including enhanced data residency, scalability, and compliance with India’s regulatory landscape for AI-led innovation and secure workloads.

The Hyderabad region aligns with Microsoft’s global sustainability goals, featuring next-generation zero-water cooling systems and sourcing renewable energy. Microsoft has matched 100% of its global electricity consumption with renewables and invested in over 1,000 MW of new solar, wind, and hybrid projects in India, including partnerships with ReNew and Amplus to support community initiatives.
