When Access Opens Doors: How Two Young Indonesians Are Building Digital Careers Through AI and Cloud

Muhammad Yusuf Fadhel Marwiji, a forestry graduate from Makassar, transitioned into geospatial technology after discovering machine learning’s potential to analyze flood risks more efficiently. His work in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) led him to Microsoft Elevate Training Center, where he learned to process large datasets using AI, reducing manual analysis time and improving preliminary risk assessments. Yusuf emphasized the importance of validating AI-driven conclusions in the field while recognizing cloud platforms like Microsoft Azure as tools to support automation and workflows.

Emejleano Rusmin Nggepo, known as Lano, overcame economic hardships and limited device capabilities to pursue Informatics at Universitas Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa. His interest in technology grew after learning how machine learning could impact healthcare, leading him to found DiGiat Group and pursue a Back End Developer apprenticeship. Despite using an outdated laptop, Lano’s participation in Microsoft Elevate introduced him to cloud-based tools like Microsoft Fabric and Azure, which mitigated his device limitations and enabled faster data processing and model training.

Through Microsoft Elevate, Lano gained hands-on experience with data engineering workflows, including Extract, Transform, Load (ETL) processes, which highlighted the critical role of data quality in AI development. He later integrated GitHub Copilot into his projects, using AI-assisted coding to accelerate development and focus on solution logic rather than repetitive tasks. One notable outcome was a voice- and camera-based application for people who are blind, completed with AI support, demonstrating how accessible tools can bridge gaps in learning and innovation.

Both Yusuf and Lano’s stories underscore the transformative impact of access to learning opportunities, regardless of background or resources. Their experiences with Microsoft Elevate illustrate how AI and cloud technologies can empower individuals from diverse regions to build digital careers, challenge device limitations, and contribute to Indonesia’s growing tech talent pool through practical, community-driven education.
