Western Europe faced an unprecedented series of heat waves in 2026, beginning in May with temperatures shattering records in multiple countries. By mid-August, the fifth heat wave of the season pushed temperatures above 40°C across broad areas, persisting for days or weeks without relief. The extreme heat disrupted daily life, leading to hospitalizations and heat-related deaths, while also damaging roads, train tracks, and power supplies.
The prolonged heat exacerbated a severe drought, reducing river water levels to record lows and disrupting water and power supplies, transportation, and agriculture. NASA’s GEOS global model, combined with satellite data, produced daily maximum temperature maps showing the most affected regions in dark red, where temperatures met or exceeded 40°C. The heat broke records frequently, with London reaching 35.1°C in May and Bordeaux hitting 42.5°C in June, according to the UK Met Office and Météo-France.
The extreme temperatures collided with vulnerabilities in European infrastructure, including limited air conditioning access, high nighttime temperatures, and insufficient green spaces in cities. Preliminary reports suggest heat may have contributed to 10,000 excess deaths across the UK, France, Germany, and Belgium. Researchers highlight air conditioning as a critical short-term solution, noting that only 23% of European homes have it compared to 90% in the United States, contributing to higher death rates during heat waves.
Long-term solutions include planting trees, expanding parks, using reflective roof paint, and adopting heat-resistant building materials. A World Health Organization analysis identifies heat stress as the leading cause of weather-related deaths, with 36% of global heat-related fatalities occurring in Europe. Researchers emphasize that even temperatures as low as 26.7°C can endanger older adults without air conditioning, underscoring the need for targeted heat action plans and health system preparedness.
