NASA Sets Spacewalk for Station Maintenance, Live Coverage Planned

NASA announced plans for a spacewalk on Tuesday, September 1, involving two astronauts who will exit the International Space Station to replace a navigational aid and complete maintenance tasks. Live coverage will begin at 7 a.m. EDT, with the spacewalk expected to start around 8:30 a.m. and last approximately six and a half hours. The event will be broadcast across multiple NASA platforms, providing public access to the extravehicular activity. This marks the 284th spacewalk dedicated to station assembly, maintenance, and upgrades since the ISS’s deployment.

During the spacewalk, NASA astronaut Jessica Meir and ESA astronaut Sophie Adenot will replace a retroreflector on the Harmony module’s forward port, which supports spacecraft navigation during docking and rendezvous operations. After completing this task, the crew will install jumper cables for data-relay systems and prepare the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer’s radiator for future maintenance. They will also replace a high-definition camera on the station’s truss structure. These activities are part of ongoing efforts to sustain and upgrade the orbital laboratory.

Adenot will serve as spacewalk crew member 1, wearing a suit with red stripes, while Meir will act as crew member 2 in an unmarked suit. This will be Meir’s seventh spacewalk, elevating her to third place among women at NASA for total spacewalks, behind Peggy Whitson (10) and Suni Williams (9). Adenot will be conducting her third spacewalk. The astronauts have undergone extensive training for the tasks, including coordination with mission control to ensure precision and safety.

The spacewalk reflects NASA’s continuous commitment to maintaining and enhancing the International Space Station’s operational capabilities. Tasks such as replacing navigation aids, upgrading communication systems, and servicing scientific instruments are critical to sustaining long-duration human presence in low Earth orbit.
