New York’s Westchester County Department of Public Works and Transportation Selects New Flyer to Expand Transit Fleet with a Firm Order for 116 Buses

The Westchester County Department of Public Works and Transportation’s Bee-Line system finalized a contract for 121 New Flyer Xcelsior hybrid-electric buses, marking a significant expansion of its fleet. The order includes 116 40-foot buses and 5 35-foot models, with 16 of the larger buses tailored for express service featuring a single entrance door and overhead luggage racks. The agreement is part of the company’s 2025 Q3 backlog, reinforcing the county’s ongoing investment in hybrid technology.

Westchester County Executive Ken Jenkins emphasized the practical benefits of the new buses, stating they will provide a more reliable and comfortable ride while reducing emissions. The hybrid-electric models are intended to modernize the Bee-Line system, which serves millions of annual passenger trips across suburban and urban routes in Westchester County. The county has previously procured hybrid-electric buses from New Flyer as part of its sustainability initiatives.

Hugh Greechan, Commissioner of the Westchester County Department of Public Works and Transportation, highlighted the importance of fleet modernization for maintaining reliable service. The hybrid-electric buses were selected for their performance, efficiency, and environmental advantages, aiming to enhance the passenger experience throughout the county. The Bee-Line system continues to prioritize efficiency, reliability, and customer experience in its operations.

The contract strengthens New Flyer’s position in the U.S. hybrid-electric bus market, underscoring its role as a key supplier to public transit agencies. NFI Group Inc., through its subsidiary New Flyer, designs buses for diverse route needs, including local transit and express suburban services. The company supports a global installed base of over 100,000 buses and coaches across multiple propulsion systems.
