Auckland gets another Crisis Recovery Café
A new peer-led Crisis Recovery Café in Auckland’s Mt Eden offers immediate mental health and addiction support without referrals, expanding access to trained peer workers.
The Crisis Recovery Café in Mt Eden, named Te Piringa Āhuru ki Maungawhau, provides a calm alternative to emergency departments for people experiencing mental distress. Operated by Ember, the service allows walk-in access without appointments, offering peer support from individuals with lived experience. Support includes listening, practical assistance, advocacy, and connections to community services. The café aims to create a safe, non-clinical environment where people can receive immediate help tailored to their needs.
Ember, a peer-led organisation, has been delivering similar services in Auckland hospitals, including Peers in ED at Auckland City and North Shore hospitals. The new café builds on Ember’s experience, extending peer support closer to central Auckland residents. The organisation previously opened a Crisis Recovery Café in South Auckland in January, which now serves over 500 people monthly. Ember’s grassroots approach aligns with the government’s strategy to support community-based solutions.
The Mt Eden café began operating on 9 October, initially open Monday to Friday from 12pm to 8pm. From 27 October, it will expand to seven days a week with the same operating hours, including evenings and weekends. This increase in availability aims to provide more flexible access to support for those in crisis. The extended hours reflect the government’s commitment to improving crisis response times and accessibility.
The opening marks the third Crisis Recovery Café established in the Northern Region this year, following South Auckland in January and Kaitaia in August. The government states these cafés are part of a broader effort to deliver faster access to mental health support, increase frontline workers, and enhance crisis response. The initiative prioritises peer-led solutions, recognising the value of lived experience in providing effective support.
