Foreign Minister visit strengthens ties with Indonesia

New Zealand Foreign Minister Winston Peters and Indonesia’s Sugiono held talks in Auckland, describing the meeting as productive and emphasizing Indonesia’s importance as a partner amid global challenges. They reviewed progress under the New Zealand-Indonesia Comprehensive Partnership and its 2025–2029 Plan of Action, highlighting trade and economic cooperation as central themes. Peters noted efforts to reach NZ$6 billion in two-way trade by 2029, while identifying opportunities to remove trade barriers and enhance air connectivity between the countries.

The Ministers discussed expanding cooperation in agriculture, education, defence, and security, alongside regional and global developments. Peters underscored New Zealand’s long-term commitment to Indonesia, framing the relationship as a priority for future collaboration. Both sides agreed to intensify work across these areas to strengthen bilateral ties.

They also addressed food security and renewable energy, identifying practical steps to advance shared goals. The discussions reflected a focus on delivering tangible outcomes for both nations, with an emphasis on sustainable and resilient economic growth.

Following the talks, Peters and Sugiono released a Joint Statement outlining the full range of discussions and agreed next steps. The statement serves as a roadmap for continued engagement and implementation of the 2025–2029 Plan of Action.
