The New Zealand Government has allocated $22.8 million to upgrade the Pou Herenga Tai Twin Coast Cycle Trail in Northland, aiming to improve visitor facilities and create new cultural and tourism experiences. Tourism and Hospitality Minister Louise Upston stated the investment will attract more domestic and international visitors, benefiting local businesses and employment. The funding will also support trail rerouting to provide an alternative cycling route as the vintage railway is reinstated, enhancing the visitor experience.

The investment will fund improved trail infrastructure, better connections to the Bay of Islands, upgraded visitor amenities, and enhanced accessibility to allow more people to enjoy the trail. It will also support the construction of the first stage of a new cycle trail between Opua and the Whangae Tunnel, alongside a longer-term project to improve connections between Opua and Taumarere.

The funding will enable new interpretation and storytelling interactions to bring Northland’s local culture and history to life, making the trail a more compelling destination for visitors. The Bay of Islands Vintage Railway Trust’s reinstatement of the railway will be integrated into the trail, with cyclists retaining access to the service on sections of the route.

Construction is expected to begin in the current financial year, pending finalisation of the trail design and implementation plan. The $22.8 million investment builds on the trail’s estimated annual contribution of $22.8 million to Northland’s economy, reinforcing its role in supporting regional tourism and economic growth.
