Conservation Minister Tama Potaka announced the signing of a new 2050 concession with Milford Sound Tourism Limited (MSTL), guaranteeing continued operation of the Piopiotahi Milford Sound visitor terminal and Freshwater Basin carparks. The agreement follows months of negotiations and aims to support the predicted record tourism season at the iconic destination. MSTL has managed the site for decades and formalised a shareholder partnership with Ngāi Tahu in 2025 to reflect the area’s cultural significance.

The concession was granted in December 2025 after Minister Potaka’s decision, subject to terms and conditions negotiated with MSTL, Ngāi Tahu, and vessel operators. The Department of Conservation (DOC) engaged with stakeholders to address concerns about facility operations, focusing on asset management, cultural values, health and safety, and environmental compliance. The new terms introduce greater transparency in maintenance and investment plans to uphold visitor experience standards.

A key feature of the concession is the establishment of an operator forum to improve coordination among tourism operators. The agreement also prioritises conservation efforts, aligning with the Government’s broader strategy for the Milford corridor. An $8.2 million investment from the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy will further support these initiatives.

Additional upgrades planned for summer include a new Chasm experience, a swing bridge and track upgrades at Hinepipiwai Lake Marian Track, and a new recreational boat ramp and toilets at Deepwater Basin. These projects aim to enhance visitor infrastructure while maintaining environmental and cultural integrity.
