The Government will provide up to $500,000 from the Regional Infrastructure Fund to support infrastructure upgrades in central Kaikōura, aimed at enhancing access for both residents and visitors. The funding will contribute to a $750,000 project that includes a new pedestrian and cycle bridge across Lyell Creek and an extension of the West End car park. Kaikōura District Council will match the Government’s contribution with $250,000, bringing the total project cost to $750,000.

Tourism Minister Louise Upston highlighted the importance of improving infrastructure to support Kaikōura’s tourism success, noting that better access will enhance visitor experiences and convenience for locals. The project will create a more direct connection between the West End, town centre, and the wider walking and cycling network, including the Whale Trail. Upston stated that improved parking, pathways, and cycling links will benefit local businesses by facilitating easier movement of visitors around the town.

The car park extension is expected to add approximately 60 new spaces, alongside the construction of a new access road, footpath, and recreational green space. The pedestrian and cycle bridge across Lyell Creek will provide a safer and more efficient route between key areas of Kaikōura, reducing reliance on road travel. These improvements are designed to support both daily commutes and tourism-related activities in the town.

Regional Development Minister Shane Jones emphasized that the project aligns with the Regional Infrastructure Fund’s purpose of addressing practical local needs. Jones noted that the upgrades will make Kaikōura a better-connected place for living, visiting, and business. The project will now proceed through detailed design, costing, consenting, and procurement phases before construction can commence.
