More accessible emergency alerts
New Zealanders will receive emergency alerts via the Govt.nz app, reducing reliance on mobile towers and allowing location-based customisation while maintaining existing alert systems.
The Govt.nz app will now deliver official emergency alerts and severe weather warnings, providing an additional channel beyond mobile phone towers. Users can select alerts for their home, workplace, travel destinations, or locations where family and friends live. The feature aims to improve accessibility and choice in receiving critical information during emergencies. The government has confirmed it will not track user activity or store personal information within the app.
Emergency Management Minister Mark Mitchell emphasised that the new alerts complement existing systems, including MetService services and the Emergency Mobile Alert system. He stated that more channels for emergency information improve public safety. The app will retain alerts even after initial notifications are dismissed, ensuring users can access them later.
The Govt.nz app will also include emergency preparedness information and contact details for local Emergency Management Committees. This provides practical guidance on preparing for and responding to emergencies. Users are reminded that natural warning signs, such as those for tsunamis or floods, should prompt immediate evacuation without waiting for an alert.
The Govt.nz app is available for free download on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. The update reflects a shift toward more accessible and customisable emergency communication for New Zealanders.
