New urgent care service for Rolleston

Health Minister Simeon Brown announced the new Toka Hāpai Selwyn Health Hub service, which will operate from 5pm to 8pm on weekdays and 9am to 5pm on weekends and public holidays. The initiative aims to address the frequent need for residents to travel to Christchurch for non-life-threatening medical issues, particularly during evenings and weekends. By treating patients locally, the service seeks to ease demand on Christchurch Hospital’s emergency department, one of the busiest in the country, and Pegasus 24 Hour Surgery.

The urgent care service will handle non-life-threatening injuries or illnesses that require prompt attention but do not necessitate emergency department care. This includes conditions such as minor fractures, infections, or other acute but non-critical health concerns. The Government states that expanding local urgent care reduces travel burdens on patients and allows hospital staff to prioritize more serious and complex cases.

The new service is part of a $164 million investment through Budget 2025 to expand urgent and after-hours healthcare nationwide. Once fully implemented, the Government claims 98 per cent of New Zealanders will be within an hour’s drive of in-person urgent care. The Rolleston service was prioritized due to rapid population growth in the Selwyn district and existing gaps in after-hours healthcare access.

Mr Brown emphasized the Government’s focus on improving basic health services and preparing for future needs. He stated that ensuring residents in Rolleston and across New Zealand can access urgent care close to home is a central goal of the health system’s development strategy.
