New ward boosts capacity at Hawke’s Bay Hospital
A new 28-bed ward at Hawke’s Bay Hospital increases surgical capacity, easing pressure on emergency departments and existing wards while supporting local jobs.
Health Minister Simeon Brown announced the opening of a 28-bed ward at Hawke’s Bay Hospital, designed to address growing demand for surgical care. The ward provides dedicated pre- and post-operative spaces, reducing disruptions to planned surgeries and improving patient flow. Off-site construction completed the project in nine months, maintaining clinical and safety standards while minimizing disruption to patients and staff. The ward is fully staffed with 3.8 FTE senior nurses, 28 FTE registered nurses, and 6.4 FTE healthcare assistants, including 13 new hires.
The new ward supports local employment, with six regional trade companies involved in its construction. Health Minister Brown highlighted its role in strengthening Hawke’s Bay’s economy by keeping investment within the region. The project aligns with broader hospital upgrades, including a $44.8 million Cancer Centre and a $35.8 million radiology expansion that doubled scanning capacity. These initiatives aim to enhance healthcare services across the district.
Local MPs Catherine Wedd (Tukituki) and Katie Nimon (Napier) were acknowledged for advocating improved health services for their communities. The ward’s opening reflects the government’s focus on addressing immediate healthcare needs while planning long-term redevelopment. Health Minister Brown emphasized the importance of delivering practical solutions to reduce pressure on existing facilities.
Planning for Hawke’s Bay Hospital’s long-term redevelopment is progressing, with detailed business cases and design work underway. The new ward provides immediate relief for patients and staff, complementing ongoing infrastructure investments. The government reiterated its commitment to strengthening healthcare capacity and infrastructure in the region.
