Wonder Boy in Monster Land, originally released in 1987, has never received an official PC port until a Steam listing appeared on September 28 under the misspelled title 'Wonderboy in Monster Land.' The developer, Retro Maniac, has no prior Wonder Boy titles in its catalog, and the listing omits the required licensing details from Sega or LAT Corp, which jointly control rights to the franchise.

The confusion stems from a split in ownership: LAT Corp holds the game’s IP, while Sega owns the Wonder Boy trademark, requiring both parties’ approval for any re-release under that name. Previous legitimate remakes, such as Wonder Boy Returns Remix and Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap, clearly disclose their licensing status on Steam, unlike the Retro Maniac listing.

The legitimacy of the Retro Maniac port was questioned after composer Shinichi Sakamoto and the Wonder Boy Universe fan account on X highlighted its unauthorized status, noting it is unavailable in Japan and has been downloaded 10,000 times. The listing appears to be a ROM running in the MAME emulator with minor alterations, such as the removal of a Sega splash screen.

Valve has not responded to inquiries about the listing, and Sega has not commented despite multiple outreach attempts. A DMCA takedown notice has been claimed by the Wonder Boy Universe account, but no public-facing notice has yet appeared on Steam’s page, which typically indicates an active complaint. Sega and LAT Corp have not made legitimate Wonder Boy games easily accessible on Steam, despite past availability in other collections.
