SH54 resilience improvements on the way
New Zealand’s government will replace the crash-prone Haynes Bridge on State Highway 54 with $6.5 million from the Regional Infrastructure Fund to improve safety and resilience on a key Manawatū-Whanganui route.
The Haynes Bridge on State Highway 54 in Manawatū, currently operating with a single lane due to safety concerns, will be replaced under a new funding commitment. The Regional Infrastructure Fund will provide $6.5 million for the project, addressing the bridge’s aging condition and high crash history. Transport Minister Chris Bishop highlighted the risks of further deterioration, including potential 59km detours for residents, businesses, and freight operators. The government says the replacement will create a safer, more reliable route for regional connectivity.
Regional Development Minister Shane Jones emphasized the bridge’s role in connecting communities to jobs, markets, and opportunities. He stated that safe, reliable roads are essential for economic activity across Manawatū-Whanganui. The investment aligns with the Regional Infrastructure Fund’s goal of supporting regional growth and resilience. Design and consenting work is expected to begin within six months, with construction slated to start in 2027.
The Regional Infrastructure Fund targets infrastructure projects that strengthen economic growth and regional productivity. This includes improving transport networks to unlock investment opportunities across regional New Zealand. The fund’s investment in Haynes Bridge reflects its broader mandate to enhance resilience and reliability in critical transport links. The project is part of a wider effort to address aging infrastructure in the region.
Transport Minister Chris Bishop noted that the bridge’s current single-lane operation creates bottlenecks and safety risks. A replacement will eliminate these issues while supporting freight movement and regional connectivity. The government says the project will deliver long-term benefits for communities and businesses relying on State Highway 54.
