Long overdue replacement for critical bridge
The New Zealand Government will replace the Deep Creek Bridge on State Highway 82 in South Canterbury at a cost of $7.5 million, citing structural deterioration and long-term value.
The New Zealand Government has announced the replacement of the Deep Creek Bridge on State Highway 82 in South Canterbury, funded through the Regional Infrastructure Fund. The bridge, which carries approximately 1,850 vehicles daily, supports local travel, agriculture, and freight movements. Regional Development Minister Shane Jones emphasized the bridge’s role in daily commutes, business operations, and access to services for South Canterbury communities.
Transport Minister Chris Bishop stated that strong transport links are vital for regional productivity and connectivity. He highlighted significant structural deterioration, including major cracking in the pier, making replacement more cost-effective than ongoing repairs. Bishop noted that the investment will provide long-term benefits for road users and freight operators.
Design and consenting work for the replacement bridge is expected to begin within six months, with construction anticipated to start in 2027. The project follows the replacement of the Elephant Hill Stream Bridge and the ongoing replacement of the Waihao North Bridge on the same highway.
The Regional Infrastructure Fund invests in infrastructure to support economic growth, resilience, and regional productivity across New Zealand. The fund aims to strengthen transport networks and unlock investment opportunities in regional areas.
