Xbox CEO Asha Sharma introduced Xbox Labs on Tuesday, a new division within the Xbox gaming group tasked with turning emerging ideas into playable experiences for players and developers. The team, composed of game makers, engineers, and scientists, will focus on exploring new technologies without abandoning existing priorities. Sharma’s announcement did not explicitly mention generative AI but referenced recent AI-fueled projects that have rapidly transformed game development and accessibility. These include unauthorized ports like Halo: Combat Evolved playable in a web browser and Bloodborne running on PC, challenging traditional industry assumptions.

Sharma highlighted the potential of these experimental projects to make games more accessible, revive older titles, and empower players to become creators. The Xbox Labs initiative aims to build openly, learn from community engagement, and measure success by increased player and creator participation. The team’s website currently features looping trailers for Halo: Infinite, Fable, Sea of Thieves, and Gears of War: E-Day, suggesting a broad scope for exploration. Sharma emphasized that Xbox Labs is an addition to existing commitments rather than a replacement for ongoing work.

The announcement contrasts with Sharma’s February remarks, where she stated the gaming team would avoid "soulless AI slop" and prioritize human-crafted games. In her Tuesday message, Sharma clarified that Xbox Labs is a way to explore new technology while maintaining focus on the 4Cs—Core, Content, Creator, and Connection—and responsible stewardship of IP. The shift reflects a growing industry trend, with Epic Games also embracing AI-accelerated development the day prior.

Xbox Labs is led by Scott Van Vliet, Xbox’s chief technology officer, and will operate with a hands-on approach to experimentation. The division’s work could lead to unexpected projects, such as mashups of existing franchises or entirely new concepts. Sharma’s message underscored the dual nature of these explorations, noting that while they may challenge existing business models, they ultimately benefit players and creators.
