Nikon's telescopes to be installed on Axelspace's next-generation Earth observation satellites “GRUS-3”
Nikon will supply telescopes for seven next-generation GRUS-3 Earth observation satellites developed by Axelspace, scheduled for launch no earlier than July 2026, enhancing daily global observation capabilities.

Nikon Corporation announced it will install custom telescopes on seven GRUS-3 microsatellites developed by Axelspace Corporation. The telescopes, designed using Nikon’s applied optics and precision technologies, will enable high-resolution imaging with a spatial resolution of 2.2 meters from an altitude of 585 kilometers. When paired with Axelspace’s image sensor units, the system achieves a swath width of 28.3 kilometers and a maximum capture length of 1,356 kilometers. The collaboration builds on Nikon’s prior supply of telescopes for GRUS-1 and four additional satellites launched in 2018 and 2021, respectively.
Axelspace’s GRUS-3 satellites are part of the company’s Earth observation constellation, designed to provide wide-area and high-frequency data. With seven satellites in operation, the system will enable daily observation of the same point on Earth. The microsatellites are equipped with optical sensors to support applications such as environmental monitoring, disaster response, and infrastructure management. The partnership between Nikon and Axelspace underscores the growing role of commercial microsatellites in global Earth observation.
The telescopes supplied by Nikon are engineered to meet the demanding requirements of space-based imaging, leveraging the company’s expertise in optical and precision technologies. Each GRUS-3 satellite will operate independently while contributing to the collective capabilities of Axelspace’s constellation. The launch, scheduled for no earlier than July 2026, marks a continuation of the companies’ ongoing collaboration in space technology. Nikon has not disclosed the financial terms of the agreement.
