Expanding OpenAI’s presence in Brazil
OpenAI launched commercial operations in Brazil to support local businesses, developers, and institutions in leveraging AI for economic and social growth, following rapid adoption trends.
OpenAI announced the establishment of commercial operations in Brazil, headquartered in São Paulo, to collaborate with local businesses, developers, researchers, and public institutions. The move aims to translate Brazil’s rapid AI adoption—evidenced by its status as one of ChatGPT’s top three markets—into economic and social benefits. Brazil’s weekly active ChatGPT users have nearly doubled in the past year, with approximately 215 million messages sent daily. An independent study by RegLab, funded by OpenAI, projects AI could contribute nearly R$1 trillion to Brazil’s economy by 2030, contingent on skills development, responsible deployment, and institutional partnerships.
Brazilian users are increasingly integrating AI into professional tasks, with 35% of classified messages from individual ChatGPT accounts in June 2026 being work-related, compared to 30% globally. Entrepreneurs like Lina Prades, a jewelry designer, and Ariane Santos, owner of Tapioca da Ari, have expanded AI use beyond experimentation to streamline operations, marketing, and production. Brazil’s developer ecosystem is also growing, ranking second globally in OpenAI API usage and first in Latin America for Codex, with weekly Codex users increasing elevenfold and daily interactions nearly thirtyfold since early 2026.
The expansion includes a fivefold increase in ChatGPT Enterprise seats in Brazil year over year, with the country now among OpenAI’s ten largest markets for business customers. OpenAI’s local team will assist organizations in identifying use cases, training staff, and establishing governance frameworks. Brazilian companies across sectors such as financial services, commerce, and customer service are already deploying OpenAI technology, signaling diverse applications and future growth potential in the market.
To engage the local ecosystem, OpenAI hosted the OpenAI para Devs roadshow in four cities, culminating in a hackathon where developers built prototypes like a tool to help small businesses navigate public procurement. Brazil’s creative use of AI is further highlighted by its leading global adoption of ChatGPT Images and high usage of voice features. Collaborations with artists and creators, including a Creators Day event in São Paulo, underscore OpenAI’s commitment to learning from Brazil’s cultural context and supporting innovative applications of AI across industries.
