CD Projekt wanted to put a chain weapon in The Witcher 3 years ago, but it's taken until Songs of the Past because it was 'impossible to do at the time'

CD Projekt’s *Songs of the Past* expansion for *The Witcher 3* introduces Geralt’s silver chain weapon, first considered over a decade ago but deemed technically unfeasible until now. Game Director Jakob Rokosz confirmed the chain was discussed during *The Witcher 3*’s original development but abandoned due to technical limitations. He noted that challenges involved animations and physics, which were later resolved during the game’s remastering process. The team ultimately implemented the weapon to align with the expansion’s narrative and enemy designs.
Senior quest designer Despoina Anetaki explained the chain’s thematic fit with *Songs of the Past*, particularly its role against new enemies called Swarmions. She described the weapon as an alternative to the crossbow, designed to offer variety for players fatigued by its repetitive use. The chain slows time when activated and allows targeting specific body parts, mirroring the crossbow’s mechanics. Anetaki emphasized its utility in crowd control, keeping Swarmions at bay during combat.
The silver chain’s inclusion reflects Geralt’s lore from the novels and early *Witcher* media, though it has never been a playable tool until now. Rokosz highlighted the weapon’s fluid, natural feel, crediting technical advancements and remastering efforts for its realization. The expansion also expands on Geralt’s friendship with Dandelion and introduces a more vibrant new region compared to prior content.
The chain’s debut follows its demonstration at Gamescom, where journalist Joshua Wolens observed its mechanics firsthand. Players familiar with the crossbow will find the chain a distinct but functionally similar tool, offering fresh tactical options. The expansion’s focus on narrative cohesion and enemy design underscores CD Projekt’s intent to enhance gameplay variety.
