Critical Role's upcoming series with Hololive gave Matt Mercer 'a deeper understanding and appreciation' for vtubers
Critical Role and Hololive vtubers collaborate on Shattered Legends, a six-episode miniseries premiering mid-November, blending TTRPG storytelling with anime-style performance.
Critical Role and Hololive vtubers are collaborating on Shattered Legends, a six-episode miniseries set to premiere in mid-November. The project originated from a pitch by Hololive’s Nerissa Ravencroft, who long admired Critical Role’s work. Mercer noted the collaboration deepened his appreciation for vtuber performers’ skills despite logistical challenges in filming mixed human and 2D formats.
The series adapts a darker narrative inspired by Berserk and Soulsborne games, fitting into Critical Role’s Exandria setting as a self-contained campaign. Players will use Daggerheart, Critical Role’s TTRPG, which replaces D&D’s d20 system with two 12-sided dice representing hope and fear. Mercer highlighted Daggerheart’s narrative dynamics, which encourage tension and creative collaboration among players.
Ravencroft, leading Hololive’s side, designed her character, collaborated on visuals, and produced an original song for the series. The cast includes Ravencroft, Mori Calliope, Gigi Murin, and Shiori Novella, all vtubers who sought to tell a story darker than typical fan expectations. Mercer and Marisha Ray guided the adaptation, ensuring it aligned with Critical Role’s existing lore while remaining accessible to new players.
Shattered Legends will premiere on Ravencroft’s YouTube channel, marking a rare crossover between tabletop roleplaying and vtuber communities. Mercer expressed interest in expanding the story’s world beyond the six episodes, leaving room for future adventures if audience demand exists.
