How to use Battle Idols and Protection Idols in Valheim, and where to find the Forge of Potential
Valheim 1.0 introduces Battle Idols and Protection Idols to upgrade weapons and armor at the Forge of Potential, found in the Mountains biome.
Battle Idols and Protection Idols, found randomly in chests across Valheim’s biomes, serve as upgrade materials for gear. Wooden, bronze, iron, or other material variants correspond to specific gear types. These idols do not have an immediate function but become essential later in the game for enhancing equipment. Players are advised to collect any idols encountered during exploration.
The Forge of Potential, the sole location for using idols, is located in the Mountains biome. Due to the biome’s harsh conditions, players must prepare with frost resistance mead or wolf fur armor to avoid freezing. The forge’s map icon resembles an idol, and its spawn location is often near boss Moder’s summoning altar, typically atop a tall peak.
Upgrades at the Forge of Potential require matching idols and gear materials. For example, a bronze Protection Idol can upgrade bronze armor, while an iron Battle Idol enhances iron weapons. Players select gear from their inventory, insert the appropriate idol, and attempt refinement. Success improves durability and specific stats, but failure destroys the gear and inflicts damage.
A bronze sword upgrade example shows durability increasing by 50 points, slash damage rising from 41 to 47, and block force improving from 25 to 30. All other stats remained unchanged. Upgrades carry a risk of failure, so players should ensure they are at full health before attempting refinement.
