Jagex partnered with a RuneScape-inspired idle game to turn the sequel into an official spinoff
Jagex and Games by Malcs announced Melvor Idle 2 as an official RuneScape-inspired idle game, subtitled A RuneScape Adventure, with no microtransactions and a 2026 release.
Jagex has partnered with developer Games by Malcs to officially brand Melvor Idle 2 as a RuneScape-inspired idle game, adding the subtitle A RuneScape Adventure. The collaboration marks a continuation of their five-year relationship, during which Jagex first published the original Melvor Idle without branding changes. The sequel will not take place in RuneScape’s world of Gielinor but retains the idle RPG mechanics that define the series.
The announcement emphasizes Jagex’s support for the project, stating that Melvor Idle’s inspiration from RuneScape is strong enough to warrant official recognition. The company highlights the game’s focus on pure idle mechanics and its avoidance of microtransactions, a contrast to some past monetization controversies in RuneScape. Visual overhauls and an increased level cap of 120 are also confirmed for the sequel.
Melvor Idle 2 builds on the original’s idle RPG foundation, expanding its systems while maintaining the core loop of passive progression. The game’s branding as a RuneScape Adventure does not imply a direct tie to RuneScape’s lore or setting, focusing instead on gameplay similarities. Players familiar with idle RPGs will find a familiar structure with enhanced visuals and deeper progression.
The partnership reflects Jagex’s willingness to support fan-built games inspired by its MMOs, despite past skepticism around monetization in the genre. The sequel’s announcement signals a commitment to the idle RPG format without the controversies that have surrounded other RuneScape-related monetization efforts. Players can expect a polished idle experience with no microtransactions when it launches in 2026.
