Less than 2 weeks after announcing RuneScape Reignited, Jagex is scrapping the whole thing
Jagex abruptly canceled RuneScape Reignited less than two weeks after announcing it, citing player feedback and community concerns over splits and restrictions.
Jagex announced RuneScape Reignited on November 19, proposing fresh-start servers for new and returning players to ease re-entry into the game. The initiative aimed to attract lapsed players without disrupting the existing community, but faced immediate criticism over potential server fragmentation and interaction limits. Concerns also arose regarding a separate subscription requirement for the new servers, adding financial barriers for participants.
Within days of the announcement, Jagex issued an apology to veteran players, acknowledging they felt sidelined by the proposal. The studio then outlined planned revisions based on feedback and invited further input from the player base. Mod Ryan Philpott, associate creative director, framed the revisions as an attempt to address community sentiment before finalizing the project.
After reviewing additional feedback, Jagex concluded that the proposed changes did not sufficiently address core issues. In a blog post, Philpott stated the company had "missed the mark" and would not proceed with RuneScape Reignited. The decision reflects a pattern of rapid reversals at Jagex when player backlash is substantial, including past cancellations of monetization systems and content.
Despite canceling Reignited, Jagex offered a 10-day free trial starting December 2, granting full access to all game worlds and content. The studio emphasized that the 2027 roadmap for RuneScape remains unchanged, reaffirming its commitment to community-driven development and ongoing player input.
