The Scott Pilgrim EX – Back in the Band DLC, released now on PlayStation, adds three new playable characters—Stephen Stills, Kim Pine, and Knives Chau—to the existing Sex Bob-omb lineup. Tribute Games emphasized that these additions required more than just new sprites; each character’s animations and idle poses were designed to reflect their personalities, ensuring they felt like natural extensions of the game. The development team, including artists Artem Samoilov and Samantha Lhoir, focused on subtle details such as facial expressions and secondary motions to convey character traits before players even engaged in combat.

Artem Samoilov led the redesign of the Character Select screen to accommodate the new characters while maintaining visual balance. The idle animations for Kim Pine, Knives Chau, and Stephen Stills were crafted to communicate their distinct personalities—Kim with quiet confidence, Knives with restless energy, and Stephen with a hint of surprise. These animations, though often fleeting, were intended to make the characters feel more lifelike and relatable, aligning with Tribute Games’ philosophy of infusing emotion into every movement.

Early concept sketches played a crucial role in defining each character’s silhouette, posture, and personality before transitioning to pixel art. Small adjustments, such as altering a stance or exaggerating a pose, were made to improve readability while staying true to Bryan Lee O’Malley’s original designs. The iterative process between sketches and final sprites highlighted the depth of work required to ensure animations felt organic and faithful to the source material.

Knives Chau’s development posed a unique challenge due to her fast-paced, hit-and-run combat style. Her scarf was designed not only as a visual element but also as an extension of her attacks, emphasizing her acrobatic movement and relentless pressure. The team aimed to translate each character’s personality directly into gameplay, ensuring that their animations and mechanics reflected their in-game identities. Scott Pilgrim EX and the Back in the Band DLC are available now on PlayStation.
