BioWare Deserved Better
Electronic Arts shut down BioWare, ending a 30-year legacy of influential RPGs like Mass Effect and Dragon Age, and canceling Mass Effect 5 amid 400 job cuts.
Electronic Arts announced the closure of BioWare, a storied video game studio known for landmark RPGs such as Mass Effect and Dragon Age, ending its 30-year run. The studio’s remaining employees were laid off as part of approximately 400 job cuts at EA, marking a sudden and unceremonious end to a developer once celebrated for narrative-driven, choice-based games. BioWare’s legacy includes creating spaces for representation and inclusion, with its games leaving a lasting impact on players and the industry alike.
The closure follows years of underperformance and troubled development cycles, including the cancellation of Mass Effect 5, which had been in early development since its 2020 announcement. BioWare’s final released game, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, failed to meet EA’s sales expectations despite positive critical reception, raising concerns about the studio’s future. Analysts had previously warned that EA might sell off studios that did not generate significant revenue, particularly after private investors, including Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, agreed to purchase the company last year.
BioWare’s history includes groundbreaking titles like the original Mass Effect trilogy and Dragon Age games, which sold millions of copies and won awards such as Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2014. The studio also developed Baldur’s Gate and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, laying the foundation for future successes like Baldur’s Gate 3. However, BioWare faced criticism over games like Mass Effect 3’s ending and Dragon Age 2, as well as harassment directed at developers, including senior writer Jennifer Hepler.
The loss of BioWare extends beyond its games, as the studio’s closure contributes to the broader trend of mass layoffs in the gaming industry over the past four years. Hundreds of developers who worked on BioWare’s titles now face uncertain career prospects, while the industry loses a studio known for its innovative storytelling and inclusive representation. The long-term ramifications of BioWare’s closure on the gaming landscape remain unclear as the industry grapples with the consequences of such a significant loss.
