Konami's Castlevania: Belmont's Curse Plays Like.a Dream
Konami’s *Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse* revives the classic side-scrolling action with modern refinements, starring Rose Belmont and debuting next month across multiple platforms.
Konami has announced *Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse*, a new mainline entry in the franchise after more than a decade, developed by Evil Empire, creators of *Dead Cells*. The game returns to the series’ roots with refined 2D side-scrolling combat and exploration, drawing inspiration from *Symphony of the Night* while incorporating modernized mechanics. Set in 15th-century Paris, the story follows Rose Belmont, daughter of Trevor Belmont and Sypha Belnades, who inherits her parents’ combat skills and arcane abilities.
Rose’s abilities include tarot cards that unlock special powers and story elements, while her signature whip—earned after defeating the first boss, The Fallen—expands platforming and combat options. The whip allows her to latch onto objects for movement, wall jumps, and enemy pulls, with fluid, responsive controls that enhance gameplay. Early playtime revealed polished animations and a dynamic combat system, blending traditional Castlevania elements with fresh mechanics.
Visually, *Belmont’s Curse* departs from the franchise’s usual aesthetic, featuring richly detailed environments and characters animated with depth. The game’s Parisian setting is depicted in vivid motion, with heatwaves and firelight creating atmospheric effects. Early boss encounters, like The Fallen, showcase detailed animations and character portraits, hinting at the game’s visual ambition.
The demo at Tokyo Game Show offered a glimpse into the game’s systems and expansive map, with nods to past titles like *Simon’s Quest* and *Order of Ecclesia*. Story progression unfolds through environmental storytelling and Rose’s telepathic exchanges after absorbing The Fallen’s consciousness. *Belmont’s Curse* launches on October 15 for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X.
