Over the Hill Is the Perfect Replacement For Forza Horizon

Over the Hill, developed by Funselektor Labs with assistance from Strelka Games, presents itself as a deliberate contrast to the content-heavy Forza Horizon series. The game strips away the noise of notifications, rewards, and multiplayer interactions, focusing instead on solitary off-road driving through rugged wilderness. Its design prioritizes mindfulness and presence, drawing comparisons to meditative games like Jusant and Cairn while incorporating elements of off-roading simulations such as MudRunner.

The game features unlicensed but stylized recreations of classic late-20th-century vehicles, including the Land Rover Defender (Protector), Toyota Land Cruiser (Roamer), and Mercedes G-Wagon (Sentinel). Unlike racing games, Over the Hill is purely about traversal and exploration, challenging players to navigate changing landscapes, weather, and terrain conditions without time pressure or competitive elements.

In the demo, players explore Emerald Lake, a Canadian Alpine environment rendered with warm autumnal colors, clean textures, and moody lighting. The experience revolves around discovering hidden items, completing trail challenges, and rescuing stuck vehicles, with fast-travel cabins providing respite. The demo includes a mission to tow a bogged-down Land Rover to safety, highlighting the game's emphasis on problem-solving and environmental interaction.

Over the Hill will launch on Windows PC on October 14, with a demo currently available on Steam. Versions for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X are planned for 2027.
