Appointment to Monetary Policy Committee
Finance Minister Nicola Willis appointed Rebecca Williams to the Reserve Bank of New Zealand’s Monetary Policy Committee for a one-year term starting October 2026, citing her institutional expertise in monetary policy.
Finance Minister Nicola Willis announced the appointment of Rebecca Williams as an internal member of the Reserve Bank of New Zealand’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC). Williams will serve a one-year term from 15 October 2026 to 14 October 2027, a duration aligned with electoral conventions to preserve future government discretion over long-term appointments. The short-term appointment ensures continuity in the MPC’s operations while adhering to statutory and procedural requirements during the transition period.
Nicola Willis highlighted Williams’ institutional knowledge and confidence in her ability to support the MPC’s role in maintaining price stability. Williams currently serves as Senior Manager, Economics at the RBNZ, a position she has held since joining the bank in 2010. Her career at the RBNZ includes key roles within the Economics Directorate, where she developed expertise in monetary policy, economic forecasting, and policy analysis.
The Reserve Bank Board is expected to recommend Williams for the Assistant Governor Monetary Policy role, which would also position her as a member of the MPC. This dual role underscores the bank’s emphasis on continuity and expertise in monetary policy decision-making. The appointment reflects the government’s approach to balancing institutional stability with electoral conventions.
Williams’ appointment follows a period of policy adjustments by the RBNZ aimed at addressing inflationary pressures. Her deep familiarity with the bank’s operations and policy frameworks is intended to provide stability during a critical phase of monetary policy implementation and review.
