Magic’s Star Trek Set Doubles as a Must-Watch Guide to the Sci-Fi Franchise
Magic: The Gathering’s new Star Trek set adapts 14 iconic franchise stories into playable cards, launching globally on Nov. 13 with prerelease events this weekend.
Magic: The Gathering is releasing a Star Trek-themed set featuring 14 saga enchantments inspired by 13 television episodes and one film from the franchise’s 60-year history. The set includes cards depicting familiar characters, starships, and key adventures, with prerelease events beginning this weekend and a global launch scheduled for Nov. 13. Saga enchantments in Magic typically represent major lore events, but this set uses them to retell specific Star Trek stories, aligning with the show’s tradition of missions spiraling into chaos.
Among the adapted stories is 'The Naked Time,' where a mysterious infection causes Enterprise officers to lose control, revealing Spock’s emotional struggles and Sulu’s transformation into a swashbuckler. Another saga draws from 'Balance of Terror,' a submarine-style thriller where Kirk and a Romulan commander engage in a deadly game of cat and mouse, exploring themes of prejudice and mutual respect between enemies.
The set also includes 'The City on the Edge of Forever,' where Kirk must allow Edith Keeler to die to preserve history, and 'Amok Time,' which introduces pon farr and features Kirk and Spock’s iconic duel. These sagas translate pivotal Star Trek moments into playable Magic mechanics, offering fans a new way to engage with the franchise’s storytelling.
Additional stories adapted include 'Space Seed,' where Khan Noonien Singh returns for revenge against Kirk, and 'The Measure of a Man,' a courtroom drama examining artificial intelligence and individual rights through Data’s hearing. The set captures the franchise’s depth, from Borg assimilation in 'The Best of Both Worlds' to Picard’s lifetime experience in 'The Inner Light,' ensuring broad appeal for both Magic and Star Trek audiences.
