Sony Reveals Gorgeous New Playstation 5 Hardware
Sony announced a matte-black PlayStation 5 Digital Edition exclusive to Japan, priced at ¥55,000, launching November 19 alongside Grand Theft Auto VI.
Sony has introduced a new PlayStation 5 Digital Edition variant called Midnight Black, featuring a matte-black finish on both the console and bundled DualSense controller. The hardware will be available exclusively in Japan starting November 19, coinciding with the launch of Grand Theft Auto VI. The console is priced at ¥55,000, matching the cost of last year’s Japan-exclusive PlayStation 5. This edition is designed to offer a lower price point compared to U.S. models due to trade policies and import tariffs.
The Midnight Black PlayStation 5 Digital Edition is identical in specifications to the standard Japan-exclusive model released in 2023, differing only in color. Players receive the console and a matching DualSense controller, but a separate disc drive must be purchased to play physical games. Sony will sell the Midnight Black disc drive for ¥11,980, adding to the total cost for those needing disc compatibility.
For consumers outside Japan, purchasing the Midnight Black edition directly is not an option, though existing PlayStation 5 owners can buy a Midnight Black console cover for $54. The limited availability and additional accessory costs may deter some buyers, especially when compared to the higher price of U.S. models. The new edition targets players in Japan seeking a premium aesthetic without the premium price seen elsewhere.
The announcement follows Sony’s trend of releasing themed and limited-edition hardware, including Wolverine, Marathon, and Grand Theft Auto 6-themed controllers. While these editions often emphasize visual flair, the Midnight Black PlayStation 5 Digital Edition focuses on a more understated, sophisticated design for discerning gamers in Japan.
