AuroraCell, a Bulgaria-based company, has unveiled a 9.7 kWh residential energy storage system powered by sodium-ion chromium oxide (NCO) battery technology. The system uses sodium ions for charge transfer while leveraging NCO cathode chemistry to enhance battery life, stability, and performance across a broader temperature range compared to standard sodium-ion batteries. This design specifically addresses common sodium-ion limitations such as lower energy density and reduced performance in extreme temperatures, making it suitable for stationary applications.

The AuroraCell 9.7 kWh – 48 V RESS Pack is a standalone residential battery engineered for compatibility with 48 VDC hybrid inverters. It features a rated energy capacity of 9.744 kWh, a nominal capacity of 210 Ah, and a nominal voltage of 46.4 V. The battery operates within a voltage range of 32 V to 54.4 V and supports a maximum discharge current of 150 A between 0 °C and 60 °C. Its discharge temperature range spans from -40 °C to 60 °C, while charging is permitted between 0 °C and 60 °C.

According to AuroraCell, the sodium-ion NCO cells can achieve 20,000 cycles at 100% depth of discharge at 25 °C, with standard charge and discharge rates of 0.5C. The company claims the system offers an ultra-safe design with no fire or explosion risk. The battery holds certifications including UL9540A, UN38.3, MSDS, and CE, and is rated IP65 with dimensions of 483 mm × 254 mm × 754 mm and a weight of 110.5 kg.

The 48 V sodium-ion NCO battery is compatible with hybrid inverter platforms from Victron Energy, Deye, Solis, Growatt, Schneider Electric, SMA, Sungrow, Sofar Solar, Studer, and Ingeteam. AuroraCell states that additional inverter brands can be supported upon request. The product includes a 20-year warranty.
