Razer and the National University of Singapore’s School of Computing announced the Razer-NUS Joint AI Research Lab, a collaboration focused on advancing AI technologies tailored for gaming environments. The initiative will explore foundational research in areas such as digital humans and ambient intelligence, building on Razer’s existing AI projects like Razer AVA and Project Motoko. The lab aims to address the growing demand for AI-driven gaming experiences, with the global AI in gaming market projected to expand significantly by 2035.

The partnership introduces Gaming Artificial Narrow Intelligence (GANI), a new research domain designed to create AI models specifically for interactive digital environments. GANI could enable AI teammates that adjust tactics in real time, generate context-aware dialogue, and dynamically modify game difficulty to improve player engagement. These advancements will support Razer’s existing AI innovations, including Razer AVA’s personalized interactions and Project Motoko’s ambient responsiveness, by providing a stronger technical foundation.

Research will prioritize three core areas: core model innovation, real-time content systems, and advanced personalization capabilities. The lab will operate on an iterative research-to-translation model, testing innovations in both simulated and live gameplay environments before integrating successful outcomes into Razer’s proprietary systems. NUS Computing will lead research efforts and talent development, while Razer will contribute industry expertise and commercialization opportunities.

The Razer-NUS Joint AI Research Lab will be hosted on the NUS campus in Singapore. Associate Professor Ooi Wei Tsang from NUS Computing, who serves as the lab’s director, emphasized the importance of universities in advancing scientific discovery and shaping emerging disciplines. The collaboration aims to bridge AI research with real-world game development, equipping developers with tools to create smarter AI and unlock new gameplay experiences.
