"An outright ban will not eliminate AI from the modding process," Nexus Mods say as they rule out barring generated creations from their site
Nexus Mods will not ban AI-generated mods but will require clearer disclosure of AI use and strengthen tagging to help users make informed downloads.
Nexus Mods has decided against an outright ban on AI-generated mods, instead expanding rules to mandate disclosure of AI usage in mod creation. Owner and CEO Victor 'Foledinho' Folmann stated that AI is already embedded across the modding process, making a ban impractical and counterproductive. The platform will continue allowing AI-generated content provided it meets transparency and permission criteria, with users retaining control over how much AI content they encounter.
The site is tightening its existing tagging system to make AI-generated or AI-assisted mods easier to identify. Uploaders of new mods must now provide a public explanation of how AI was used, and AI-related tags will appear more prominently on mod pages. Moderation standards are also being introduced to enforce these rules, with consequences for violations.
Nexus Mods is developing new permission options to give modders greater control over how their works can be reused, particularly concerning AI training and derivative mods. The platform is also investing in security tools and staff to address concerns about malicious code hidden in AI-generated content, acknowledging a rise in such risks.
Existing mods must comply with the new rules within a 60-day grace period ending January 2nd. Folmann acknowledged mixed community reactions, framing the approach as a balance between transparency and prohibition, while emphasizing human oversight in modding.
