Helldivers 2 boss can "absolutely see" making a game parody of generative AI, but it would need to be "quirky" rather than "doom-laden"
Arrowhead’s creative chief suggests a future game could parody generative AI, but insists it must remain lighthearted rather than dystopian.
Arrowhead’s chief creative officer Johan Pilestedt has expressed openness to developing a game that satirises generative AI, though he stressed it would need to avoid a bleak tone. Speaking in an interview, Pilestedt described a hypothetical title where players confront an AI deity, but clarified this would not be a Helldivers project. He emphasised the need for a quirky, fun framing rather than a doom-laden one, aligning with Helldivers’ established satirical style.
Pilestedt contrasted Helldivers’ approach to satire with the broader industry’s reception, noting that while some players may not grasp the humour, many embrace the joke. He highlighted the game’s ability to deliver messages through humour rather than conceal them, citing Helldivers’ portrayal of fascism as an example. The Automatons in Helldivers 2, though robotic, are framed as a spoof of Soviet aesthetics and Terminator tropes rather than a commentary on generative AI.
The Automatons originate from the secessionist planet Cyberstan and are led by Cyborgs seeking revenge against Super Earth for attempted eradication. Pilestedt suggested potential for future updates to draw clearer parallels to contemporary issues, though he did not specify how generative AI might be directly integrated. Arrowhead has not ruled out using generative AI tools internally, provided they respect intellectual property rights.
Arrowhead’s CEO Shams Jorjani previously addressed industry debates around generative AI, acknowledging polarised views from automation optimism to existential threats. Jorjani compared generative AI to older automation tools like Simplygon, noting differences in scale and impact. He underscored the importance of avoiding intellectual property infringement while exploring new technologies. Pilestedt also briefly addressed Arrowhead’s unannounced project, stating it would not be Helldivers 3 to preserve the momentum of the current game.
