Helldivers 2's GameGuard cheat policing "wasn't as effective as it could have been", cue a switch to Easy Anti-Cheat as part of a crackdown on cheat mods
Helldivers 2 will replace GameGuard with Easy Anti-Cheat to combat cheat mods, potentially affecting some cosmetic modifications.
Helldivers 2 developer Arrowhead announced a switch from GameGuard to Easy Anti-Cheat, citing the former’s limited effectiveness against cheat mods. The studio acknowledged that while GameGuard provided some protection, it failed to fully address the issue of unfair advantages in multiplayer matches. Arrowhead emphasized the need for stronger safeguards to maintain fair gameplay and protect the integrity of the Galactic War experience for all players.
The transition to Easy Anti-Cheat, an industry-standard solution used in over 200 games, aims to enhance security and deter cheating. Arrowhead plans to implement additional security tools alongside the new software to further strengthen protections. The studio also stressed that the crackdown extends beyond software manipulation to include mods that tamper with the game or negatively impact other players.
Arrowhead clarified that most cosmetic and non-gameplay mods remain unaffected, as they do not provide unfair advantages. However, mods that alter gameplay or disrupt others may no longer function. Some non-malicious cosmetic mods might require updates from their creators to remain compatible with the new anti-cheat measures.
Players concerned that the new anti-cheat is blocking a harmless mod or software can contact Arrowhead’s support team via Zendesk. The studio encouraged modders to reach out if they encounter issues, acknowledging the role of mods in PC gaming culture while prioritizing fair play in Helldivers 2’s multiplayer environment.
