7 things you need to know about this year's holiday shoppers
Global survey reveals holiday shoppers prioritize AI-driven discovery, smaller meaningful purchases, price comparisons, and social commerce, with physical stores also remaining key.
The useful question is what changes for users, developers or buyers, and whether the announcement stays industry context or becomes something people can actually use.
A global survey of 12,000 consumers and 4,800 businesses across six countries found that 69% believe AI will simplify discovering new brands and products, with higher earners more optimistic. Among shoppers, 74% expect AI to help locate deals and 67% to provide personalized recommendations based on past purchases. Retailers are increasingly integrating AI tools, such as Shopify’s Sidekick and shop.ai, to enhance customer experiences and streamline operations. The shift reflects a broader trend where AI is expected to benefit both merchants and consumers during peak shopping periods.
Technology adoption is influencing purchasing decisions, as 39% of shoppers prefer brands that embed tech into the shopping experience, and 20% report greater loyalty to such brands. Shoppers planning to spend over $1,200 during Black Friday-Cyber Monday are twice as likely to use advanced tools. Meanwhile, 75% of retailers are increasing tech investments to capitalize on the holiday season. The data suggests that retailers lagging in tech integration risk losing customer engagement and sales during this critical period.
Consumers are prioritizing smaller, meaningful purchases over high-cost gifts, with 78% planning to buy items that provide everyday satisfaction, up from 69% in 2022. Wellbeing-related products are also in demand, with 63% of shoppers seeking such items. Experiential spending is rising, particularly among those aged 25-44, with 62% focusing on experiences that foster connections. Retailers can capitalize on this trend by offering customization options, such as engraving or design choices, to enhance affordability and appeal. Cross-selling platforms like Shopify Collective provide opportunities to attract budget-conscious shoppers.
Price sensitivity remains high, with 72% of consumers shopping during Black Friday-Cyber Monday to maximize value amid inflation and rising living costs. A significant 84% plan to compare prices for the best deals, prompting retailers to explore bundling and subscription models to balance discounts with profitability. Social commerce is gaining traction, as 33% of shoppers may purchase directly from Instagram, 31% from Facebook, and 28% from TikTok. Looking ahead, 30% of businesses anticipate social platforms will drive the highest sales volume by 2030, underscoring the need for seamless shopping experiences across channels.
